Sandwiches: The Ultimate Gambling Food

Gambling is a fun way to meet new people and keep in touch with old friends. A lot of people set aside a specific night once a week to play poker with friends. This is often a lot of fun, but if you want to host a poker night or poker party, preparing for it can be a bit of a hassle. After all, it can be confusing to figure out what kind of food might make a good partner for a bracing game of Texas Hold'em. There are a few things to keep in mind though; for example, since you and your poker buddies will probably be handling cards and eating at the same time, it's a good idea to stick to finger foods instead of serving full meals.

If you're stumped on what kind of food to serve your poker buddies, here's a suggestion:

Sandwiches are a great way to keep the munchies away while you and your friends are playing poker. Legend has it that the sandwich was created by John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, specifically so that he could eat while keeping one hand free, so that he could gamble at the same time. If there was any sort of food suited for gambling, then the sandwich is it. After all, it was made specifically so that people could eat and gamble at the same time.

According to legend, John Montagu asked a waiter to place some roast beef between two slices of bread, so that the grease and the juices from the beef wouldn't drip onto the cards and table, or soil his fingers, while still allowing him to eat with one hand. This is an important thing to remember when making sandwiches for poker night. Try to keep your sandwiches simple. While it may be tempting to create giant, elaborate hoagies stuffed with fillings that are delicious but could easily fall out while someone is taking a bite, it's best to stick to a maximum of three fillings and to skimp on the drippy sauces, however delicious it may seem to do so. It can be a big bother to try to hold a giant sandwich together while attempting to figure out how to make the best out of a mediocre hand.

One tried and true sandwich to offer is the peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It is compact, delicious, and neat. One way to jazz this sandwich up is to add some chocolate sauce, or to slice them in to interesting shapes. If you really want to go with the poker party spirit, why not try slicing the sandwiches into card suit shapes? It's a fun and simple way of keeping to the theme of poker night, while adding a bit of festive spirit and keeping your guests fed.
